Texas requires eligible first-time driver license applicants ages 18–24 to complete a six-hour adult driver education course. Adults age 25 or older may take the course voluntarily to satisfy the knowledge-test requirement.

The teen program is for applicants ages 14–17 and includes behind-the-wheel instruction. The adult course is a six-hour classroom-equivalent program required for eligible first-time applicants ages 18–24. Adults age 25 or older may take it voluntarily.

No. You can complete the adult driver education course before visiting the Department of Public Safety. Bring your Certificate of Completion with you when you apply.

Yes. Texas does not require adults age 25 or older to complete driver education, but they may take this course voluntarily. After passing the included knowledge test, they will not need to take a separate knowledge test at DPS. All remaining licensing requirements still apply.

The course is eight chapters plus a course summation and final exam, and it takes a minimum of six hours including a mandatory 30 minutes of break time. Page timers prevent you from moving faster than the state minimum.

You have 180 days from the date of enrollment. Within that time you can log in and out as often as you like, and your progress saves automatically.

Yes. The course runs on any device with an internet connection, and you can start on one device and finish on another.

You need 70% or higher to pass. Three attempts are included in the course price, and you will answer a minimum of 40 validation questions throughout the course.

Yes. The complete course is available in Spanish at no additional charge.

No. The approved course includes the knowledge test. After you pass, your electronic Certificate of Completion provides proof that you satisfied the course and knowledge-test requirements. You must still complete the remaining DPS licensing steps.

Your electronic Certificate of Completion is normally processed and emailed within three business days after you pass. Same-day electronic processing is available for an additional charge. Certificates are delivered electronically only and are not mailed.

Bring your Certificate of Completion, proof of identity and social security number, proof of insurance and registration if you own a vehicle, and the application fee. You will complete a vision test and a behind-the-wheel driving test.

The complete six-hour online course costs $28.95. The price includes the course, final knowledge test, Spanish course option, and electronic Certificate of Completion. Same-day certificate processing is available for an additional charge.

You may request a refund as long as you have not completed the course. If you have a special circumstance or need additional assistance, contact customer service. Requests may be reviewed individually.

Impact Texas Adult Drivers, or ITAD, is a separate program that must be completed before taking the driving skills test. It is not included in the six hours of adult driver education.
