Texas allows classroom driver education to begin at age 14, although a learner license generally cannot be issued until age 15.

U.S. Highway 69

U.S. 69 is Alba’s most important regional highway.

A beginning driver should learn to increase scanning distance as speed increases and leave sufficient room for traffic slowing to turn into businesses, FM roads, or private driveways.

FM 17

FM 17 provides local and regional access from Alba and introduces students to a more rural road environment.

Alba’s strongest local driving distinction is its relationship with Lake Fork.

The city itself emphasizes its proximity to the reservoir.

Students may encounter:

• Pickup trucks towing boats
• Boat trailers
• RVs
• Fishing traffic
• Drivers slowing for lake-access roads
• Visitors unfamiliar with the area

A vehicle towing a trailer needs more stopping distance and more room to turn.

New drivers should avoid following closely and should not remain beside a trailer unnecessarily.

East Texas vegetation can reduce sight distance around curves and side roads.

Students should avoid driving faster than the distance they can clearly see ahead.

A curve may hide a stopped vehicle, wildlife, slow-moving equipment, or a vehicle preparing to turn.

The contrast between town streets and rural roads becomes more pronounced after dark.

Students should practice maintaining a safe speed based on headlight visibility and watching carefully for wildlife and unlighted driveways.

Eligible residents can complete the applicable online classroom portion from Alba, Hawkins, Mineola, Quitman, Winnsboro, Yantis, and surrounding rural communities.

Texas licensing law does not change from one Wood County community to another.

Mineola

Mineola lies southeast along U.S. 69 and adds heavier commercial traffic, U.S. 80, and railroad crossings.

Quitman

Quitman is the county seat and provides access to SH 37, SH 154, county services, and the confirmed Wood County Driver License Office.

Yantis

Yantis provides another Lake Fork-oriented rural driving environment.
