Learning to drive in Argyle

Argyle sits in the southern part of Denton County, where local residential streets connect with US 377, FM 407 and I-35W. For a new driver, that means learning to handle ordinary neighborhood traffic as well as higher-speed roads, freeway entrances and frontage roads.

Students in Argyle can choose among three distinct Texas driver education paths. Eligible teens may use Parent-Taught Driver Education or a licensed school's teen driver education program. Adults ages 18 through 24 applying for a first Texas driver license generally need the separate six-hour adult course. The correct path depends on age and licensing circumstances. Parent-Taught Driver Education

Texas Parent-Taught Driver Education is designed for eligible teens whose parent, step-parent, grandparent, step-grandparent, foster parent or legal guardian will handle the required instructional responsibilities. The family must follow the current TDLR PTDE process and obtain the required PTDE guide. The parent is not automatically qualified simply because they are the student's parent. (Texas Licensing)

Teen Driver Education, Block Method

The block method is a school-based teen driver education option in which the student completes the classroom portion before obtaining the learner license. Texas DPS describes the block method as completion of all 24 classroom hours before the learner permit stage. The applicable behind-the-wheel instruction is completed separately. (Texas Department of Public Safety)

6-Hour Adult Driver Education

The six-hour adult course is a separate pathway for first-time Texas driver license applicants ages 18 through 24. Applicants age 25 and older are not required to complete driver education to obtain a first Texas license, although they still must satisfy the other applicable licensing requirements. Texas Parent-Taught Driver Education in Argyle

A teen can begin the classroom portion at age 14, but cannot receive a learner license until age 15 and the required classroom stage has been completed. Under the current TDLR PTDE guide, families using the block method complete all 32 classroom hours before the learner-license stage. (Texas Licensing)

PTDE has the same basic education and driving requirements as other approved teen driver education pathways, but the instructional responsibilities are handled differently. The parent instructor is responsible for the applicable in-car training and required documentation.

After obtaining the learner license, the student must complete the required supervised driving experience. Texas requires 30 additional hours of behind-the-wheel practice, including at least 10 hours at night, before progressing to the provisional-license stage. (Texas Department of Public Safety)

Texas Teen Driver Education, Block Method in Argyle

For the licensed-school pathway, Texas DPS identifies the block method as completion of the entire 24-hour classroom portion before obtaining the learner license. The student then continues with the required behind-the-wheel education and supervised practice. (Texas Department of Public Safety)

The school-based teen in-car phase includes seven hours of behind-the-wheel instruction and seven hours of observation. The student also needs the additional 30 hours of supervised practice required by Texas law, including 10 nighttime hours. (Texas Licensing)

DriverEdToGo provides the online classroom/theory portion described for its teen block-method course. Professional in-car instruction must be completed separately when required.

Texas 6-Hour Adult Driver Education in Argyle

Applicants ages 18 through 24 who are applying for their first Texas driver license generally must complete a six-hour adult driver education course. The requirement does not apply to a new Texas resident age 18 or older who is surrendering a valid, unexpired out-of-state license, and people age 25 or older are not required to complete driver education. (Texas Department of Public Safety)

The adult course is separate from teen driver education. After completing the course, the applicant continues with the applicable DPS licensing process, including vision, knowledge and driving testing requirements.

Applicants who will take a driving skills test must also complete the applicable Impact Texas Drivers program. For adult applicants, the Impact Texas Adult Drivers program is a separate one-hour program and its certificate is valid for 90 days. (Texas Department of Public Safety)

Texas Driver's License Process

Teen Applicants

The Texas Graduated Driver License program has two major stages before an unrestricted license:

  1. Learner License
  2. Provisional License

A teen generally must be at least 15, complete the required classroom stage, provide the required identity, residency and school documentation, and receive the appropriate driver education certificate before obtaining the learner license. (Texas Department of Public Safety)

The learner license must generally be held for at least six months. Before the provisional license, the student must complete the required behind-the-wheel education, 30 hours of supervised driving including 10 nighttime hours, and the applicable testing. (Texas Department of Public Safety)

The Impact Texas Teen Drivers program is separate from driver education. It must be completed after the required behind-the-wheel education and before the driving skills test, with the certificate dated within 90 days of the test. (Impact Texas Drivers)

Adult Applicants

Adults follow a different licensing pathway. First-time applicants ages 18 through 24 generally need the six-hour adult course. Applicants age 25 or older do not have a driver education requirement, although they still must meet DPS testing and documentation requirements. (Texas Department of Public Safety)

Denton County Driving Overview

Denton County combines established suburban communities with rapidly developing areas and major regional highways. The county's transportation network includes I-35E, I-35W, US 377, FM 407, FM 1830, FM 2499 and other state and farm-to-market routes.

For a new driver, one of the most useful skills is learning how to transition between neighborhood streets and higher-speed corridors. A driver who is comfortable on a residential street still needs practice judging freeway speeds, choosing an entrance lane, maintaining following distance and reading frontage-road signs.

County transportation work is also active. Denton County reported 2026 improvements at FM 407 and I-35W involving turn lanes, drainage, pavement markings and related intersection work. (Denton County)

Driving in Argyle

Argyle's driving environment is shaped particularly by US 377, FM 407 and I-35W. Town planning documents identify I-35W, US 377 and FM 407 as three major corridors and describe continuing transportation improvements along these routes. (Argyle Texas)

FM 407 is especially relevant because it connects local development with I-35W. The I-35W interchange requires drivers to understand frontage-road movements and turning traffic before entering the interstate.

US 377 also carries drivers through areas where commercial, residential and regional traffic meet. A beginning driver should practice identifying turn lanes early, watching for changing speed limits and checking mirrors before moving across lanes.

Major Roads and Highways

  • I-35W: High-speed north-south freeway requiring freeway merging and lane-position skills.
  • US 377: Major north-south route through the Argyle area with a mixture of local and regional traffic.
  • FM 407: Major east-west corridor connecting Argyle with I-35W and communities farther east.
  • FM 1830: Important north-south route connecting the Argyle area with surrounding Denton County communities.
  • Local residential streets: Useful for developing basic turns, stops, parking and neighborhood awareness before progressing to higher-speed roads.

Primary Local Driving Topic: FM 407 and I-35W

The FM 407 and I-35W area is a particularly useful place for new drivers to understand how local roads connect with a major interstate.

A driver approaching the interchange needs to recognize that frontage roads can function differently from the interstate main lanes. Turning movements, entrance ramps and traffic coming from other directions can occur within a relatively small area.

Denton County has specifically undertaken improvements at the FM 407 and I-35W intersection, making construction awareness another useful skill for local students. Drivers should obey temporary signs, lane markings and work-zone directions whenever construction is present. (Denton County)

Additional Local Driving and Safety Considerations

Freeway Merging

Practice reaching an appropriate speed before entering I-35W, checking mirrors and blind spots, and leaving enough space for other vehicles to merge.

Construction Zones

Texas driver education courses completed on or after September 1, 2026 must include information about construction and maintenance work zones under SB 1366. (Texas Licensing)

Residential to Rural Transitions

Roads around Argyle can change quickly from developed residential areas to less urban surroundings. New drivers should expect differences in lighting, shoulders, traffic volume and nighttime visibility.

Online Driver Education Throughout Denton County

Eligible students living in Argyle can complete the applicable online portion of a Texas driver education program from home. Living in Argyle does not create a separate local driver education law. Texas licensing and education requirements apply statewide.

The same distinction remains important throughout Denton County: PTDE and teen school-based education are teen pathways, while the six-hour adult course is a separate adult pathway.

Important Cities and Communities

Denton

Denton is the Denton County seat and provides major DPS and driver-training resources for residents throughout the northern part of the county.

Northlake

Northlake is particularly relevant to Argyle drivers because of the I-35W and FM 407 transportation network connecting the communities.

Bartonville and Flower Mound

These southern Denton County communities connect with Argyle through FM 407 and other regional corridors, giving new drivers opportunities to progress from residential streets to busier arterial roads.
