Texas PTDE can be a practical option for an eligible Bailey teen whose family wants a parent or other qualifying adult to handle the applicable instruction.

Learner License

The adult pathway is separate from teen driver education.

If you are 18 through 24 and applying for your first Texas driver license, DPS requires a 6-hour adult driver education course before testing. Teen Applicants

A typical teen path is:

1. Complete the applicable driver education classroom phase.
2. Meet the Texas learner license requirements.
3. Obtain the learner license at age 15 or older.

Farm-to-Market Roads

Farm-to-Market routes form a large part of everyday rural travel in Fannin County. They can connect small communities, farms, lakes and state highways without the traffic controls found on larger urban streets.

Bailey's most useful driver education focus is learning how quickly the driving environment can change.

A student may leave a residential area, enter a two-lane highway and soon encounter a tractor, a pickup pulling a trailer, an intersection with a county road or a vehicle traveling substantially slower than highway traffic.

The safest approach is to anticipate those changes rather than react at the last second. Look farther down the road, keep a larger following distance and reduce speed before entering an intersection or curve.

Agricultural Traffic

Fannin County includes extensive rural and agricultural areas. Farm equipment can move much more slowly than normal highway traffic and may need additional room to turn.

Night Driving

Rural roads around Bailey can have fewer sources of artificial lighting than urban areas. New drivers should use appropriate headlights, reduce speed when visibility is limited and watch carefully for animals and unlit vehicles.

Severe Weather

North Texas can experience severe thunderstorms. Drivers should monitor weather conditions before leaving and avoid driving through water when the depth or condition of the roadway cannot be determined.
