Eligible students use one Texas driver education pathway:

FM 516
TxDOT’s Ward County schematic identifies a 7.67-mile FM 516 project with rural and urban portions. The preliminary design calls for 12-foot travel lanes and roadway reconstruction through the corridor.
For beginning drivers, FM 516 provides practice with:
- Rural highway speeds
- Construction zones
- Shoulder changes
- Heavy vehicles
- Temporary markings
- Rural intersections
- Dust and reduced visibility
Construction-Zone Driving
Students should follow current:
- Work-zone speed limits
- Temporary signs
- Lane markings
- Flaggers
- Traffic-control devices
A familiar road can operate differently during construction.
Permian Basin Traffic
Barstow-area students may encounter:
- Oilfield service trucks
- Equipment trailers
- Commercial vehicles
- Pickup trucks entering industrial roads
- Slow-moving work vehicles
Maintain extra following distance and avoid truck blind spots.
Rural Night Driving
Outside the community, lighting becomes limited quickly.
Students should practice:
- Correct headlight use
- Longer following distance
- Early recognition of intersections
- Wildlife scanning
