Learning to drive in Big Sandy

Big Sandy supports a strong standalone page because it sits in southwestern Upshur County near SH 155 and the U.S. 80 corridor. The city combines small-town streets, school traffic, railroad activity, higher-speed state highways, and wooded rural roads.

Eligible students use one Texas driver education pathway based on age and licensing plan:

  • Parent-Taught Driver Education
  • Teen Driver Education, Block Method
  • Texas 6-Hour Adult Driver Education.

SH 155 and U.S. 80-Area Driving

SH 155 is Big Sandy’s key regional route and connects the city with Gilmer, Gladewater-area roads, and neighboring East Texas communities.

Beginning drivers should practice:

  • Highway-speed control
  • Early turn preparation
  • Safe following distance
  • Truck awareness
  • Rural intersection judgment
  • Speed changes entering town

Big Sandy High School

Big Sandy High School is located at:

401 N. Wildcat Drive Big Sandy, TX 75755.

The district also operates from the same Wildcat Drive area, which creates concentrated student, bus, parent, and event traffic.

Big Sandy City Hall

City Hall is located at:

119 E. Gilmer Street Big Sandy, TX 75755.

The police department is at 203 E. Gilmer Street, and Public Works is at 205 E. Gilmer Street.

East Gilmer Street therefore carries civic, police, public-works, parking, and local business traffic.

Railroad and Rural Roads

The county baseline identifies railroad awareness and wooded rural roads as important Upshur County driving topics.

Students should expect:

  • Railroad crossings
  • Limited nighttime lighting
  • Curves
  • Wildlife
  • Logging and commercial vehicles
  • Driveways entering higher-speed roads

Driver License Resources

Big Sandy does not have a confirmed full DPS Driver License Office in the county baseline.

The Gilmer DPS Area Office at 713 State Highway 155 N. is the closest documented Upshur County DPS resource, but applicants should verify current driver-license services through the DPS appointment system before visiting.
