Bloomington, Texas Online Driver’s Ed

SH 185 is Bloomington’s principal regional road.

TxDOT is planning a two-lane SH 185 overpass over the railroad in Bloomington.

The project also includes access roads and realignment of FM 616. TxDOT says the goal is to improve traffic flow and create a safer non-at-grade railroad crossing because trains can block the current crossing and delay ordinary travel, school transportation, and emergency services.

The published TxDOT timeline places construction around spring 2028, so this should be described as a planned project rather than active construction.

The planned project would realign a section of FM 616 east of Bloomington and connect it back to SH 185 south of the current intersection.

This gives students an important lesson:

• Road alignments change.
• Familiar intersections may be redesigned.
• Drivers should follow current signs and markings rather than memory.

Until the planned grade separation is built, railroad-crossing awareness remains central to Bloomington driving.

Students should:

• Obey gates and flashing lights.
• Never drive around lowered gates.
• Never stop on the tracks.
• Leave enough space to clear the crossing.
• Expect trains even when road traffic is light.
