TxDOT’s 2026 Unified Transportation Program identifies two major Brenham U.S. 290 projects. One is an intersection and operational improvement project east of FM 2679 to SH 36 with an estimated construction cost of about $95 million. Another involves the BU 290 interchange area with an estimated construction cost of about $215.5 million. Both are in the FY 2026-2029 letting range.

This is Brenham’s strongest city-specific transportation topic.

TxDOT’s April 2026 project-development update describes a planned reconstruction of the U.S. 290/SH 36 interchange, including:

• Four reconstructed mainlanes
• Direct connector ramps
• Bridges

• Improved frontage roads
• Conversion of some frontage roads from two-way to one-way
• Bicycle and pedestrian facilities.

TxDOT’s traffic-study material states that the interchange project is expected to begin construction in 2027 and be completed in 2029 under the current schedule.

For students, this means the intersection should not be driven from memory as construction begins.

TxDOT has also programmed conversion of part of U.S. 290 approaching SH 36 from a five-lane undivided roadway to a four-lane divided highway using restricted crossing U-turns, or RCUTs.

rather than assuming the old intersection pattern still applies.

TxDOT held a public meeting in March 2026 for proposed improvements to Business SH 36/South Day Street north of U.S. 290 and SH 36 south of U.S. 290.

The proposal would extend and reconfigure medians to improve traffic flow, business access, and safety near the U.S. 290 intersection.

This remains a proposed improvement rather than a completed roadway change.

Brenham gives students a useful progression from city streets to major highway navigation.

Before approaching U.S. 290/SH 36:

• Read route signs early.
• Select the correct lane in advance.
• Check mirrors before changing lanes.
• Signal.
• Maintain adequate following distance.
