There is an unusual point that families should understand when researching the current rules. Some DPS public pages still describe the block method as 24 hours of classroom instruction. Once the teen reaches the applicable licensing stage, the Texas program also includes:

• 7 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction
• 7 hours of observation instruction
• 30 hours of supervised driving practice
• At least 10 of those 30 practice hours at night
• A learner license holding period of at least six months for a minor seeking a provisional license
• Impact Texas Teen Drivers completion before the driving skills test

Texas treats adult driver education separately from teen driver education.

If you are 18 through 24 and applying for your first Texas driver license, DPS currently requires completion of a six-hour adult driver education course. The requirement is waived for a new Texas resident who is at least 18 and surrenders a valid, unexpired out-of-state driver license. Teen Applicants

A typical teen progression is:

1. Begin the driver education classroom phase when eligible. Texas permits classroom instruction to begin at age 14.
2. Complete the classroom requirement for the selected method.

5. Practice with a properly licensed adult.
6. Hold the learner license for at least six months unless the license expires when the student turns 18.
7. Complete the required in-car instruction and supervised driving.

Local and Farm-to-Market Roads

Severe Weather and Flooding
