The Waller County baseline identifies Brookshire as an incorporated southern-county city with I-10, U.S. 90, FM 359, frontage roads, heavy trucks, and major planned freeway improvements.
Eligible students use one Texas driver education pathway:
- Parent-Taught Driver Education
- Teen Driver Education, Block Method
- Texas 6-Hour Adult Driver Education.
I-10
I-10 is Brookshire’s defining highway.
TxDOT’s 2026 Unified Transportation Program identifies a major widening project from FM 359 to the Waller-Fort Bend County line.
The project:
- Is programmed for FY 2026-2029
- Has an estimated construction cost of approximately $479.2 million
- Is classified as a Tier 1 Houston District project.
Students should expect:
- High-speed traffic
- Trucks
- Heavy commuter traffic
- Construction activity
- Entrance and exit ramps
- Changing frontage-road configurations
I-10 Frontage Roads
TxDOT separately programs new frontage-road work from FM 359 toward the Fort Bend County line.
The Brookshire-Pattison regional plan identifies:
- I-10 managed-lane expansion
- New frontage roads
- Additional I-10 widening
- Related FM and U.S. highway improvements.
Frontage-road practice should include:
- Watching vehicles exit I-10
- Watching vehicles enter ramps
- Commercial-driveway awareness
- Lane selection
- Cross-street intersections
- Early preparation for turns
FM 359
FM 359 is one of Brookshire’s main north-south roads.
TxDOT’s regional plan includes future widening from I-10 to U.S. 90, with an estimated project year of 2029.
Students should expect:
- Trucks
- Growing traffic
- Highway intersections
- Rural-to-suburban transitions
- Construction-related changes
U.S. 90
U.S. 90 provides a surface-highway alternative to I-10.
The Brookshire-Pattison planning program identifies future widening on U.S. 90 from I-10 to Bartlett Road.
For students, U.S. 90 adds:
- Railroad-related traffic
- Commercial entrances
- Local intersections
- Trucks
- Higher speeds than neighborhood roads
36A North
The proposed 36A North corridor begins at I-10 west of Katy and extends toward U.S. 290 west of Waller.
TxDOT states the study area includes Brookshire and is approximately 20 to 25 miles long. The project is currently in environmental study and alternatives development.
