Parent-Taught Driver Education
Parent-Taught Driver Education allows an eligible parent, step-parent, grandparent, step-grandparent, foster parent, or legal guardian who meets Texas requirements to serve as the instructor for the applicable driver education process. TDLR says PTDE has the same education and driving requirements as driver education completed through a licensed school or public school. (Texas DL&R)
The parent or other qualifying instructor is responsible for the applicable in-car instruction and practice requirements. Families should review the current TDLR PTDE process before beginning.
Online portion: The classroom portion can be completed through an approved online provider.
Use: Eligible teen students following the PTDE pathway.

The classroom course and the required in-car components are separate parts of the overall licensing process.
