For a first Texas driver license, applicants ages 18 through 24 generally must complete an approved six hour adult driver education course. The requirement does not apply to a new Texas resident age 18 or older who surrenders a valid, unexpired out of state license. That network matters to a beginning driver because a short local trip can quickly become a rural highway trip. FM roads may connect smaller communities to the state highway system, while county roads can provide access to homes, farms and ranch areas.

Drivers should be prepared for longer stretches between controlled intersections and should maintain a speed that allows enough time to respond to curves, intersections and slower traffic.

Cranfills Gap also has a small local street network, so students should not assume that every driving lesson needs to happen on the highway. Basic turns, stops, parking and intersections should be mastered locally before moving into longer rural drives.

Cranfills Gap is a good example of why a Texas driver education course should be followed by real driving practice. The classroom can teach right of way, signs and traffic laws, but the student still needs experience changing from a quiet town street to a rural highway.

On FM 219 or SH 22, a beginning driver has to judge speed and following distance differently than on a residential street. Curves, hills and changing sight distance also require the driver to look farther ahead.

Supervised practice should gradually introduce these conditions instead of moving directly from basic neighborhood driving to a long highway trip.

Agricultural and Rural Traffic
