Learning the US 82 and SH 70 Highway Transition
The most useful local skill for a new Dickens driver is learning how to transition between town driving and highway driving.
At the US 82 and SH 70 junction, students need to recognize traffic approaching at highway speeds, choose a safe gap, signal early, and avoid making a turn based only on the vehicle immediately in front of them.
Practice should also include returning from the highway into town. Drivers need to reduce speed appropriately, watch for intersections and turning traffic, and avoid carrying rural-highway speeds into the local street environment.
TxDOT has documented maintenance and improvement work on the SH 70 corridor, including a project from the Motley County line to US 82. Road conditions and work zones can change, so students should check current TxDOT information when practicing on the route. (Texas Department of Transportation FTP)
