Learning to drive in El Campo
TxDOT states that U.S. 59 through El Campo serves both local and statewide traffic and is part of the future I-69 Texas route.
U.S. 59 / Future I-69
TxDOT is developing U.S. 59 through El Campo toward interstate standards.
The planned improvements are intended to:
- Add frontage roads
- Control access to the main lanes
- Use entrance and exit ramps
- Separate local traffic from high-speed through traffic.
Students should practice:
- Highway-speed lane control
- Truck spacing
- Early exit planning
- Ramp awareness
- Following distance
- Frontage-road traffic
North and South El Campo Projects
TxDOT divides the El Campo work into two projects:
- El Campo North, from SH 71 to Business 59 north of the city
- El Campo South, from Business 59 south of the city to SH 71.
This gives the city unusually strong transportation-specific content.
Frontage-Road Driving
TxDOT’s project documentation describes new frontage roads along U.S. 59 to support controlled access.
Students should watch for:
- Vehicles leaving main lanes
- Vehicles entering ramps
- Commercial driveways
- Local intersections
- Trucks changing lanes
SH 71
SH 71 is another major El Campo corridor.
Students should practice:
- Higher-speed surface-road driving
- Highway intersections
- Turning lanes
- Commercial vehicles
- Rural-to-city speed transitions
Business U.S. 59
Business U.S. 59 gives students a more urban highway environment than the main U.S. 59 corridor.
It adds:
- Commercial driveways
- Traffic signals
- Local businesses
- Lower-speed traffic
- Railroad-related crossings
Railroad Awareness
El Campo has longstanding railroad infrastructure, and U.S. 59 project documents reference railroad-related highway improvements.
Students should never stop on tracks or enter a crossing unless there is room to clear it fully.
Driver License Resources
The county baseline does not establish a current ordinary Class C Driver License Office in El Campo.
Historical DPS records reference an El Campo-area sub-district office, but that is not enough to publish it as a current standard Driver License Office.
Applicants should use the current DPS locator.
