The PTDE pathway lets an eligible parent or other qualifying instructor handle the required instructional responsibilities. TDLR requires families to follow the PTDE process and use an approved course.

Texas DPS requires the teen to complete the applicable education and driving requirements before receiving a provisional license. First-time Texas applicants ages 18 through 24 generally must complete the 6-hour adult driver education course. Applicants age 25 and older are not required to complete driver education.

The adult course is not a substitute for the DPS application, vision, knowledge, and driving requirements.

Teen applicants follow the Texas Graduated Driver License system. The learner license allows supervised practice, while the provisional license permits independent driving subject to restrictions.

Adults have a separate process. Applicants ages 18 through 24 must generally complete the adult course before testing, while applicants age 25 and older do not have a driver education requirement.

I-110

I-110 provides a short freeway connection between I-10 and the Bridge of the Americas area. TxDOT's I-10 Connect project addresses the interchange and connections among I-10, US 54, I-110, and Loop 375.

Major City Streets

Mesa Street, Doniphan Drive, Artcraft Road, Redd Road, Zaragoza Road, Montana Avenue, and other major arterials serve different parts of the city. A beginning driver should learn how local streets connect to the freeway network rather than memorizing road names in isolation.

For El Paso students, freeway navigation deserves focused practice.

The I-10, US 54, I-110, and Loop 375 system contains multiple interchanges and connector movements. TxDOT's I-10 Connect project specifically addresses connections among these highways and access to the Bridge of the Americas Port of Entry.

A new driver should:

• Read overhead signs early.
• Choose the correct lane before reaching a connector.
• Check mirrors before changing lanes.
• Maintain a safe following distance.
• Avoid sudden lane changes when an exit is approaching.
• Understand that frontage roads may provide the next practical route when a direct freeway movement is unavailable.

Freight and Truck Traffic

The I-10 corridor carries significant freight and truck traffic. Drivers should allow additional space around large vehicles and avoid lingering in blind spots.

Extreme Heat

The region's desert climate means summer heat can place additional demands on vehicles and drivers. Vehicle maintenance and preparation matter, particularly before longer freeway trips.

Severe Weather and Flash Flooding

El Paso's regional climate includes risks from extreme heat, flash floods, drought, and fire. Drivers should slow down when visibility or road conditions deteriorate and avoid entering flooded roadways.

Pedestrians and Cyclists

Anthony

Anthony is located along I-10 near the New Mexico border. Its local driving environment differs from central El Paso because of the combination of interstate traffic, SH 20, and local streets.

Clint

Clint is part of the Lower Valley network and connects with regional routes including SH 20, FM 1110, and I-10.

Horizon City

Horizon City lies along the eastern I-10 corridor. Horizon Boulevard, FM 1281, connects the town with Socorro and other communities.

Socorro

Socorro is connected to Horizon City and other Lower Valley communities through major arterial routes.

San Elizario

San Elizario is connected to Clint and the Lower Valley through SH 20 and FM 1110.
