TDLR's current driver education overview describes at least 24 hours of classroom instruction and 44 total in-car hours, consisting of 7 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, 7 hours of observation, and 30 hours of supervised practice. Teen Applicants

Adult Applicants

Bexar County contains both dense metropolitan road networks and lower-density roads on the urban edge. Elmendorf's location in southeast Bexar County makes the transition between those environments especially relevant.

Major regional routes include Loop 1604, I-37, US 181 and numerous FM roads. The practical skill for a beginning driver is learning to recognize the difference between a neighborhood street and a state or federal highway.

Traffic conditions can also change quickly when a local road approaches a major interchange. Students should practice lane positioning and speed control before attempting longer regional trips.

For a new driver, this means practicing the transition from smaller local streets to faster roads and learning to anticipate changes in traffic speed.

Elmendorf is a good example of why a beginning driver needs to practice road transitions. A student may start on a residential street and then approach FM 327 or US 181, where speeds and traffic conditions change.

The safest approach is to make lane decisions before reaching the busiest part of an intersection. Drivers should scan farther ahead, maintain a larger following distance, and avoid sudden lane changes.

The same principle applies when connecting to Loop 1604. Freeway traffic requires more advance planning than a short neighborhood trip.

Rural Edge Driving

Parts of southeast Bexar County retain a lower-density road environment. New drivers should expect longer stretches between major intersections and should avoid assuming that every road will have the same lighting or lane configuration.

Night Driving

Severe Weather

Bexar County has a subtropical climate with hot summers and periodic heavy rainfall. During severe weather, drivers should slow down and avoid entering water-covered roadways when depth or current cannot be determined. County and city emergency systems should be monitored during significant weather events.

Students in Elmendorf can complete the online portion of an eligible Texas driver education program from home. The course requirements are statewide, so a student does not receive a different legal program because they live in Elmendorf rather than San Antonio.

The local difference is practical. Students here should prepare for both residential driving and southeast Bexar County highway connections.
