Primary Local Driving Topic: Highway Driving Along US 287
Hedley is an especially good place to teach the difference between local driving and regional highway driving.
A new driver needs to understand that a road can pass directly through a small community while still carrying traffic traveling much farther. That means a driver should not assume that traffic speeds, vehicle types, or traffic gaps will behave like those on a residential street.
US 287 also has designated truck parking at the Donley County rest areas east of Hedley. Students should learn to account for larger vehicles, greater stopping distances, and limited visibility around trucks. (Texas Department of Transportation)
