Highland Haven, Texas Online Driver's Ed

A teen can begin the classroom portion at age 14, but cannot receive a learner license until at least age 15. Under the current TDLR PTDE guide, the family chooses between the Concurrent Method and Block Method. The Concurrent Method allows the student to complete the first six classroom hours before obtaining the learner license. The Block Method requires all 32 classroom hours before the learner license. The Block Method works differently from the concurrent PTDE sequence. The student completes all 32 classroom hours first, receives the applicable completion documentation, and then proceeds with the learner-license and in-car portions.

DriverEdToGo provides the online classroom portion for its Texas teen Block Method course. A student using this pathway should separately arrange the professional in-car instruction required by Texas.

Texas DPS requires a 6-hour adult Driver Education course for first-time Texas driver license applicants ages 18 through 24, with an exception for a new Texas resident age 18 or older who surrenders a valid, unexpired out-of-state license. The adult course is separate from teen driver education. It does not require the teen 32-hour classroom program or the teen 7-hour behind-the-wheel, 7-hour observation, and 30-hour supervised-practice structure.

Teen Applicants

A teen generally:

1. Begins approved driver education at age 14 or later.
2. Reaches the learner-license stage at age 15 after completing the applicable classroom phase.
3. Gets the learner license and practices with a qualified licensed adult.
4. Completes the remaining classroom and required in-car training.
5. Logs 30 hours of supervised practice, including 10 nighttime hours.
6. Holds the learner license for at least six months unless the student turns 18.
7. Completes ITTD before the skills test.

The exact sequence differs between the concurrent and Block Method formats, so students should follow the requirements attached to the course they selected.

Adult Applicants

Applicants ages 18 through 24 who are subject to the adult-course requirement complete the 6-hour course and receive the applicable certificate. That combination gives new drivers two different environments to practice. Local streets require attention to driveways, neighborhood traffic and pedestrians. RM 1431 requires highway-level scanning, appropriate following distance and careful decisions before turning or entering the roadway.

The most useful local driving skill for a new Highland Haven driver is learning how to transition from neighborhood streets to RM 1431.

A driver leaving a residential area needs to change speed, scan farther ahead and judge gaps differently. Around lake facilities, the driver also needs to watch for turning vehicles, pedestrians and vehicles pulling trailers.

The goal is not simply learning the route. It is learning how quickly the driving environment can change.

Lake Recreation

Highland Haven's parks and boat access mean that recreational vehicles and trailers are part of the local road environment. Leave extra space when following a vehicle towing a boat or other trailer and anticipate wider turns.

Hill Country Curves

Drivers traveling outside the immediate neighborhood may encounter winding roads and changing grades. Speed should be adjusted before curves rather than during them.

Night Driving

The county's less-developed areas can provide less ambient lighting than an urban street network. The required nighttime practice for teen drivers is especially relevant to learning how to recognize hazards with less visual information.
