Industry, Texas Online Driver's Ed

PTDE requires more than a parent simply teaching a teenager how to operate a vehicle. The designated instructor must meet Texas eligibility requirements, the family must follow the TDLR process, and the course must come from an approved PTDE provider. (Texas DL&R)

TDLR's current general driver education document lists a 24-hour classroom minimum, 7 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, 7 hours of observation, and 30 additional hours of supervised driving, with at least 10 nighttime hours. (Texas DL&R)

Families should also be aware of the difference between current TDLR materials. The general TDLR summary lists 24 classroom hours, while the January 2025 PTDE guide continues to describe 32 classroom hours for the block method. The teen licensing process starts with driver education and the learner license. DPS allows students to begin classroom education at age 14, but the learner license is not available until age 15 and the student has completed the applicable classroom requirement. (Texas Department of Public Safety)

Under the block method, the classroom phase is completed before the learner license stage. The teen must then complete the required in-car training and supervised driving before qualifying for the provisional license. DPS specifies 7 hours of in-car observation, 7 hours of in-car driving instruction, and 30 hours of additional supervised practice, including at least 10 hours at night. A first-time Texas driver license applicant who is 18 through 24 generally must complete an approved 6-hour adult driver education course. This requirement is not the same as the teen driver education requirement.

Applicants 25 and older generally do not have to complete driver education, but they still have to meet the applicable DPS licensing requirements and complete Impact Texas Adult Drivers before a driving skills test. (Texas Department of Public Safety)

For qualifying adults, the adult education certificate is one piece of the licensing process. It does not itself issue a driver license.

Teen Applicants

The teen process generally includes:

1. Complete the appropriate approved teen driver education program.
2. Obtain the required education certificate.
3. Apply for a learner license when eligible.
4. Complete required in-car instruction.
5. Complete supervised driving practice.
6. Complete Impact Texas Teen Drivers.
7. Hold the learner license for at least six months unless an exception applies.
8. Pass the driving skills test.
9. Obtain the provisional license.

Adult Applicants

Austin County's transportation network is rural and spread across numerous communities. Major routes include US 290, SH 36, SH 159, FM 109, FM 1457, FM 1458, FM 1093, and other FM roads. For Industry students, the important distinction is between local streets and the two major roads that meet in the community. A driver can move from a low-volume local setting directly into a highway intersection.

Industry is located at the junction of SH 159 and FM 109. That intersection is the defining local transportation feature for a beginning driver. Historical Texas transportation records also identify both routes as significant highways in Austin County. (The Portal to Texas History)

SH 159 provides an east-west connection toward Bellville and Fayette County. FM 109 runs north and south toward New Ulm and the Brenham area. This means local students need to understand both crossing and turning movements at a highway intersection rather than learning only residential street driving.

SH 159 is the primary east-west highway through Industry. It connects the community with Bellville to the east and Fayette County communities to the west.

SH 36

SH 36 is another important regional route in Austin County. TxDOT has programmed roadway rehabilitation work along portions of SH 36, making it a route local drivers may encounter when traveling toward Brenham or other communities. (TxDOT FTP)

US 290

US 290 is the major regional east-west highway serving the broader county and connects Austin County with Brenham, Houston-area communities, and points west.

For Industry students, the key local skill is understanding how to approach and cross a rural highway intersection.

A new driver should practice:

• Reducing speed appropriately before an intersection.
• Identifying stop signs and other traffic controls early.
• Checking both directions for approaching traffic.
• Judging the speed of vehicles on the highway.
• Signaling before making a turn.
• Completing turns without drifting into another lane.
• Checking mirrors after entering the highway.
• Leaving enough space when following another vehicle.

The goal is not simply passing a road test. The student needs to recognize how much more quickly traffic can approach on a rural highway than on a residential street.

Industry is surrounded by rural areas, and Austin County's road network includes many farm-to-market routes. Local drivers may encounter agricultural equipment, farm entrances, livestock-related traffic, and slower vehicles.

Students should avoid passing whenever sight distance is inadequate and should give slower vehicles plenty of room.

Rural areas around Industry generally have less roadway lighting than larger urban areas. Texas requires teen applicants to complete at least 10 of the 30 additional supervised driving hours at night. (Texas Department of Public Safety)

Night practice should help students learn to recognize intersections, control speed based on visibility, use headlights properly, and avoid relying on street lighting that may not be present.

Students should slow down when directed, obey temporary signs and lane markings, watch for flaggers, and leave additional space around vehicles.

Students in Industry can complete the applicable online education portion from home. Living in Industry does not create a separate local driver education requirement.

The same county also includes Bellville, Brazos Country, Sealy, San Felipe, and Wallis. Students may travel between these communities for school, work, appointments, or family activities, making regional road familiarity useful after the basic driving skills have been developed.

Bellville Drivers

Bellville is the county seat and a larger local center for county government and services. SH 36 and US 290 are important regional routes around the community. (Austin County)

Sealy Drivers

Sealy sits close to Interstate 10 and provides a different driving environment from Industry. Students traveling between the two communities may eventually need to progress from rural two-lane roads to freeway driving.

Brazos Country Drivers

Brazos Country is a small incorporated community near Sealy. Its residential road environment differs from Industry's highway intersection setting, but both communities connect to the same broader Austin County road network. (TML City Officials Directory)

There is no verified public DPS Driver License Office in Industry.

Do not confuse the Austin County Justice of the Peace office in Industry or the Austin County Tax Assessor-Collector with a DPS driver license office.
