Primary Local Driving Topic: Highway Intersection Skills
For Industry students, the key local skill is understanding how to approach and cross a rural highway intersection.
A new driver should practice:
- Reducing speed appropriately before an intersection.
- Identifying stop signs and other traffic controls early.
- Checking both directions for approaching traffic.
- Judging the speed of vehicles on the highway.
- Signaling before making a turn.
- Completing turns without drifting into another lane.
- Checking mirrors after entering the highway.
- Leaving enough space when following another vehicle.
The goal is not simply passing a road test. The student needs to recognize how much more quickly traffic can approach on a rural highway than on a residential street.
