The six-hour adult course is for the adult licensing pathway. It generally applies to first-time Texas license applicants ages 18 through 24.

Teen Applicants

A student who is comfortable making turns and stopping on a quiet residential street may still need practice judging speed on SH 34 or FM 667. Rural highways can provide fewer visual reference points and longer distances between intersections.

Students should learn to identify side roads early, maintain an appropriate following distance and avoid sudden braking for a missed turn. At night, headlights and speed control become even more important.

Farm-to-Market Roads

FM 667 is an important example of the type of rural route Italy-area drivers may encounter. Students should be comfortable with two-lane traffic, changing speeds and intersections without traffic signals.

Students in Italy can complete the applicable online classroom portion from home. The Texas driver education rules do not change because the student lives in southern Ellis County.

What does change is the driving environment. Families should use local practice routes to build experience with town streets, SH 34 and rural FM roads before moving to busier regional highways.

Ennis is a major southern Ellis County community and another useful reference point for students learning the regional highway system.

Waxahachie Drivers

Garrett offers a smaller-town rural environment centered around FM 879 and the surrounding county roads. It provides a different driving environment from Italy's SH 34 corridor.

Ferris Drivers
