Primary Local Driving Topic: Transitioning Between US 281, US 290, and Rural Roads
The strongest local driving lesson for Johnson City is learning to recognize how quickly the road environment changes.
A student may start on a local street, enter US 281 or US 290, and then continue into a rural two lane section. Each part of that trip requires different visual scanning and speed management.
On the larger highways, students should plan lane changes early and maintain a safe following distance. Once they leave the developed area, they need to pay closer attention to road edges, curves, intersections, passing opportunities, wildlife, and changes in pavement or shoulder conditions.
TxDOT's current projects reinforce why this matters. The agency is studying additional capacity, access, and safety improvements along US 281, while separately evaluating US 290 mobility and safety needs. (Texas Department of Transportation)
