I-35 is Laredo’s defining freight corridor.

TxDOT currently lists multiple Laredo I-35 corridor projects and describes proposed improvements across approximately 24 miles of northern Laredo and Webb County.

Students should practice:

• Highway-speed merging
• Lane discipline
• Long following distance
• Early exit preparation
• Truck blind-spot awareness
• Construction-zone driving

This is the strongest Laredo-specific training topic.

Students can encounter:

• Tractor-trailers
• Freight terminals
• Warehouse traffic
• Trucks moving toward ports of entry
• Slow wide turns
• Long queues

Students should avoid:

• Following trucks too closely
• Remaining beside trailers
• Cutting in closely after passing
• Sudden lane changes near freight vehicles

TxDOT lists the U.S. 59 Loop as an active Laredo project and states that portions are being upgraded.

The county baseline identifies the corridor as U.S. 59/Loop 20, locally known as Bob Bullock Loop, with active freeway-standard improvements.

Students should expect:

• New overpasses
• Temporary barriers
• Frontage-road changes
• Lane closures
• Construction trucks
• Changed intersection patterns

Part of the Laredo U.S. 59/Loop 20 corridor has already received I-69W designation, but the entire route has not.

U.S. 83 is another major north-south corridor.

TxDOT’s 2026 digital-delivery pilot north of SH 255 is a 4.29-mile project that will widen the road into a four-lane divided freeway as part of the future I-27 corridor. Construction letting is currently estimated for 2030.

TxDOT currently lists a Mines Road feasibility study to identify transportation needs for both ordinary travelers and commercial vehicles.

This should be treated as an advanced practice environment because of:

• Freight trucks
• Industrial entrances
• Multiple lanes
• Higher speeds
• Heavy commercial traffic

Laredo bridge approaches can involve:

• Stop-and-go queues
• Destination-specific lanes
• Commercial vehicles
• Visitors unfamiliar with the area
• Sudden slowing
• Complex signs

This is not an appropriate early driving lesson.

DPS records classify the property as a multi-service district office and separately list highway patrol and commercial-vehicle functions there.

Applicants should verify Class C, learner-license, ID, and skills-test availability through the current DPS appointment system before visiting.
