TDLR's PTDE program allows certain family members to serve as the teen's instructor after the family follows the required process. The teen can begin classroom instruction at age 14. At age 15, the student can pursue the learner license after completing the required classroom stage for the selected method and meeting the remaining DPS requirements.

In-Car Training

PTDE does not eliminate practical driving requirements. Teen training includes 7 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, 7 hours of observation and 30 hours of supervised driving. At least 10 supervised hours must be at night. (Texas Department of Public Safety)

The parent instructor handles the applicable in-car portion under PTDE.

The block method can be useful for Linden families who want to complete the online classroom portion before arranging professional in-car training.

The six-hour adult course is intended for the adult licensing pathway, not teen driver education.

Texas DPS states that applicants ages 18 through 24 applying for a first Texas driver license generally need the six-hour adult course. A new Texas resident age 18 or older who surrenders a valid, unexpired out-of-state license is exempt. Applicants 25 and older have no driver education requirement based solely on age. Teen Applicants

Linden teens generally need to:

1. Choose an approved teen education pathway.

Adult Applicants

Adults subject to the six-hour requirement should complete the course, keep their completion documentation, complete the applicable ITD program and then complete the DPS licensing and testing process.

That means students should practice more than residential driving. They need to become comfortable with multilane travel, turning movements, lane positioning and transitions between town streets and regional highway traffic.

A beginning driver should practice approaching major intersections with enough time to identify the correct lane and destination. On a larger route such as US 59, lane discipline becomes more important because traffic can move differently from the surrounding city streets.

US 59 deserves special attention for Linden students because it combines local access with regional travel.

A new driver should practice maintaining a consistent lane position, checking mirrors before changing lanes and recognizing the difference between a through movement and a turn or exit.

The student should also learn to plan lane changes early. Waiting until the last moment to reach a turn can lead to abrupt maneuvers.

The goal is not to avoid US 59. It is to build enough experience that the student can handle a multilane highway calmly and predictably.

Work Zones

Rural Connections

FM 125 and other Farm-to-Market roads provide access beyond Linden. Students should practice adjusting to two-lane roads after driving on larger highways.
