The PTDE option allows an eligible parent or another qualifying family member to take responsibility for the teen's driver education and required in-car instruction.

TDLR's current PTDE guide identifies parents, step-parents, grandparents, step-grandparents, foster parents and legal guardians as potential instructors, subject to the program's eligibility rules. The block method can make the classroom portion more straightforward because the student completes it before moving to the learner license and in-car stages.

The online classroom does not replace the driving skills test. The teen also has to satisfy the learner license holding period, Impact Texas requirements and other DPS requirements.

The adult course is designed for a different licensing situation than teen driver education.

Texas DPS requires a 6-hour adult driver education course for first-time Texas driver license applicants ages 18 through 24, subject to stated exceptions. One exception applies to certain new residents age 18 or older who surrender a valid, unexpired license from another state. (Texas Department of Public Safety)

Texas law also provides that a person who completes and passes an approved adult driver education course can avoid the highway sign and traffic law portions of the DPS examination when those portions have been successfully completed through the course. (Texas Statutes)

The adult course is not the same as a teen driver education course. It also does not include the road test.

Teen Applicants

Teen licensing follows Texas's graduated licensing system.

The student completes the classroom portion using the selected method, obtains the learner license at age 15 or later after satisfying the applicable requirements, and practices with a qualifying licensed adult.

The student then completes the remaining classroom and in-car requirements, including the required supervised driving. Before the driving skills test, the teen must also complete the applicable Impact Texas Teen Drivers program.

Adult Applicants

An adult first-time applicant ages 18 through 24 generally completes the 6-hour adult course before finishing the licensing process.

That network matters to a beginning driver because route types change quickly. A driver leaving Luling may move from local streets to US 90 or US 183, then continue into a rural environment. The driver needs to recognize lane changes, intersections, speed changes and turning opportunities well before reaching them.

Luling's location makes regional highway awareness particularly useful.

SH 80 also serves the area and connects Luling with communities to the north and south. The combination means a new driver should learn to distinguish between local streets and higher-speed state and US routes rather than treating every roadway the same.

For Luling students, one of the most useful skills is learning how to transition safely between local streets and regional highway corridors.

The road environment around US 90 and US 183 can differ substantially from a residential street. A student needs to plan turns early, check traffic before entering the roadway, maintain adequate following distance and understand that traffic may be moving at significantly higher speeds.

Students should also learn how to identify route shields and read directional signs. In a smaller community with several regional highways nearby, knowing which route to take is part of safe driving.

The objective is to build route awareness before a student starts making longer trips toward Lockhart, San Marcos, Gonzales, Seguin or the I-10 corridor.

Rural Farm-to-Market Roads
