Primary Local Driving Topic: Super 2 Highway Driving
TxDOT currently identifies a planned SH 114 Super 2 upgrade in Young County from the Archer County line to near the west limits of Olney.
A Super 2 roadway generally remains a two-lane highway but includes periodic passing lanes.
The important lesson is simple:
A passing lane gives a driver an opportunity to pass. It does not require passing.
Entering a Passing Lane
Before moving left:
- Check mirrors
- Check the blind spot
- Confirm the lane is open
- Make sure enough passing-lane distance remains
- Signal
- Accelerate smoothly
Returning to the Normal Lane
Do not cut back too closely in front of the vehicle being passed.
Wait until adequate space exists, signal, and return smoothly.
When Not to Pass
Do not pass merely because the road temporarily adds another lane.
Remain behind the slower vehicle when:
- Traffic ahead is uncertain
- The passing lane is ending
- Weather reduces visibility
- The driver is uncomfortable
- The speed difference is small
