Learning to drive in Ore City

Eligible students use one Texas driver education pathway based on age and licensing plan:

  • Parent-Taught Driver Education
  • Teen Driver Education, Block Method
  • Texas 6-Hour Adult Driver Education.

SH 155 and Lake O’ the Pines

SH 155 is one of Ore City’s most important regional routes.

TxDOT reports active bridge replacement at Lake O’ the Pines in August 2026. Traffic has shifted, with lane and shoulder closures in place.

The project is approximately 3.5 miles northeast of Ore City and crosses Big Cypress Creek at Lake O’ the Pines. TxDOT project documents describe replacement and widening of the bridge.

For new drivers, this means:

  • Shifted lanes
  • Narrower work areas
  • Construction vehicles
  • Reduced speeds
  • Boat and recreation traffic
  • Drivers unfamiliar with the area

U.S. 259

Ore City identifies U.S. 259 as one of its primary regional highway connections. The city also identifies SH 155 as a major highway serving the area.

Students should practice:

  • Highway entry
  • Safe following distance
  • Truck awareness
  • Early turn preparation
  • Rural intersection judgment
  • Speed changes entering town

Ore City ISD

Ore City Independent School District is located at:

100 Rebel Road N. Ore City, TX 75683.

The district operates elementary, middle, and high-school programs and maintains an active 2026-27 calendar.

Rebel Road therefore has a clear school-traffic role.

New drivers should expect:

  • School buses
  • Parent vehicles
  • Student traffic
  • Pedestrians
  • Athletic-event congestion

Ore City City Hall

City Hall is located at:

302 E. Main Street Ore City, TX 75683.

City council meetings are held at the municipal courtroom at the same address.

East Main Street therefore combines civic, business, parking, and pedestrian traffic.

Lake and Recreation Traffic

Ore City describes Lake O’ the Pines as being only a short drive away and identifies fishing, boating, and camping as major recreation uses.

Students should expect:

  • Boat trailers
  • Campers
  • Pickups towing equipment
  • Weekend traffic
  • Motorcycles
  • Slower vehicles turning toward lake access roads

Driver License Resources

Ore City does not have a confirmed full DPS Driver License Office in the county baseline.

The Gilmer DPS Area Office at 713 State Highway 155 N. is the documented Upshur County DPS resource. Applicants should verify current driver-license services and appointments before visiting.
