Primary Pecos County Driving Topic: US 285 South and Energy-Sector Traffic
US 285 between the Pecos area and Fort Stockton is one of the region's most important commercial corridors.
TxDOT's US 285 South project extends from I-20 in Pecos to I-10 in Fort Stockton and is intended to improve safety and mobility. TxDOT's project materials describe a proposed upgrade from a two-lane undivided road to a four-lane divided highway.
The corridor has experienced substantial commercial traffic associated with oil-and-gas activity. TxDOT's project fact sheet reported that trucks represented an average of approximately 29 percent of traffic on the studied US 285 South corridor.
For a beginning driver, that makes truck awareness one of the most important local skills.
