Primary Local Driving Topic: Rural Highway Driving Around Petersburg
Petersburg is well suited to teaching the transition from town driving to rural highway driving.
A beginning driver should understand that a rural route can feel less complicated because there are fewer buildings and traffic signals, but that does not mean the road requires less attention. Students need to maintain a consistent lane position, scan well ahead, anticipate cross traffic at rural intersections, and allow additional time for turns.
FM 54 and FM 789 also connect Petersburg to other communities, so a local trip can quickly become a regional highway trip. (Texas Department of Transportation)
