Primary Local Driving Topic: SH 79 and SH 148 Highway Intersections
For Petrolia students, learning to manage state-highway intersections is more useful than focusing only on downtown-style driving.
At an intersection between two highways, the driver needs to process several things at once:
- Which direction the route continues
- Whether the intended turn crosses opposing traffic
- The speed of approaching vehicles
- Road signs and pavement markings
- Whether larger vehicles are approaching
- Whether a vehicle behind is following too closely
The best practice is to make decisions early and avoid rushing through an intersection simply because another driver is waiting behind you.
Students should also learn the difference between a local trip through town and a longer highway trip toward Henrietta, Wichita Falls, Byers, or another Clay County community.
