U.S. Highway 82
U.S. 82 is one of the strongest local differentiators for Plains.
TxDOT’s current project materials identify U.S. 82 from the New Mexico state line to U.S. 380 as a 14.943-mile Yoakum County project segment. The same plans identify 16 intersections along the project section.
For new drivers, U.S. 82 provides practice with:
- Sustained rural highway speeds
- Long sight distances
- Trucks
- Agricultural vehicles
- Side-road intersections
- New Mexico-bound traffic
- Limited development
- Nighttime driving
U.S. Highway 380
U.S. 380 provides another important regional route through the Plains area.
TxDOT project records confirm U.S. 82/380 improvements in Yoakum County around Plains, including segments between local streets and SH 214.
Students should learn to maintain steady speed, scan far ahead, and prepare early for highway turns.
State Highway 214
SH 214 provides a north-south route through the county and connects Plains with Denver City.
It introduces students to rural highway intersections, commercial trucks, agricultural vehicles, and long stretches without urban traffic controls.
