Primary Local Driving Topic: Highway and Commercial Traffic Around Point Comfort
Point Comfort is a useful place to teach the difference between neighborhood driving and regional highway driving.
The student may leave a residential street and soon encounter SH 35 or another road carrying traffic between communities and industrial areas. That change requires a different visual strategy. Instead of looking only at the next intersection, the driver should continually scan farther ahead for slowing traffic, turning vehicles, trucks and changes in lane position.
When traveling near large commercial vehicles, keep a safe following distance and avoid driving in areas where the truck driver's visibility may be limited. New drivers should also learn to make lane changes deliberately rather than waiting until the last moment.
