Under the Texas PTDE program, eligible family members can teach a teen through an approved program. TDLR identifies parents, step-parents, grandparents, step-grandparents, foster parents and legal guardians among the qualifying relationships, subject to the applicable requirements. The teen can begin classroom driver education at age 14. The learner license is available at age 15 after the student satisfies the applicable classroom and DPS requirements.

Practical Driving

Texas DPS requires a six-hour adult driver education course for first-time Texas applicants ages 18 through 24 who are subject to the requirement. New Texas residents age 18 or older who surrender a valid, unexpired out-of-state license are exempt. Applicants 25 and older do not have a mandatory driver education requirement. Teen Applicants

Queen City teens generally move through these stages:

1. Complete approved driver education.
2. Reach age 15.
3. Meet the learner-license requirements.
4. Obtain the learner license.
5. Practice with the required supervising adult.
6. Complete the required in-car education.
7. Complete 30 hours of supervised driving.
8. Complete 10 or more nighttime practice hours.
9. Satisfy the learner-license holding period.
10. Complete ITTD.
11. Pass the driving skills test.
12. Complete the provisional licensing process.

Adult Applicants

Adults who are subject to the six-hour requirement should complete the course and retain the certificate. They then complete the applicable ITD program and DPS application and testing requirements.

Cass County had an estimated 28,651 residents in 2025. The county's transportation network includes US 59 and numerous state and Farm-to-Market routes. (Census.gov)

For Queen City, US 59 is the dominant local transportation feature. TxDOT has studied the route between Texarkana and Queen City as a possible future I-369 corridor. The existing US 59 route does not currently meet interstate standards in the study area. (Texas Department of Transportation)

That makes highway awareness particularly useful for students who will drive beyond local streets.

The main local consideration is the US 59 corridor and its connections to FM 2327 and surrounding roads.

A new driver should learn how to approach the corridor deliberately. Watch for changes in lane configuration, identify the intended turn before reaching it and avoid sudden movements when traffic is moving at higher speeds.

The local street network provides lower-speed practice, while US 59 introduces a different level of route planning. Students should progress gradually from neighborhood driving to larger roads.

US 59

FM 2327

SH 77

SH 77 serves the broader northern and central Cass County area and provides connections between communities such as Atlanta and Douglassville.

US 59 deserves special attention in Queen City because it connects the community with the Texarkana region and other Cass County destinations.

Students should practice maintaining lane position and recognizing that highway driving requires earlier decisions than residential driving.

A turn that seems obvious on a local street may require advance positioning on a larger highway. Students should check signs, mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes and should not make a sudden movement simply because they missed a turn.

Multilane Highway Driving

US 59 includes multilane roadway sections. Students should practice smooth lane changes, maintaining space around the vehicle and planning turns before the last possible moment.

Rural Roads

FM routes around Queen City provide a different driving environment. Students should learn to manage two-lane roads and intersections before making longer independent trips.

Construction

Eligible Queen City students can complete the applicable online classroom course from home.

The same statewide rules apply in Queen City as in Linden, Hughes Springs or Douglassville. The local difference is the road environment. Students who expect to use US 59 regularly should include appropriate multilane highway practice in their training.

Atlanta

Atlanta is a major regional community south of Queen City and is connected to US 59 and SH 77. Students traveling between the two communities should become comfortable with regional highway driving.

Linden

Texarkana
