Primary Local Driving Topic: I-20 and Highway Merging Around Ranger
For a Ranger student, freeway merging deserves special attention.
I-20 requires a driver to evaluate traffic speed, select an appropriate gap and accelerate to fit into moving traffic. The driver must also continue checking mirrors after merging because faster vehicles can approach from behind.
The skill is different from making a turn at a local intersection. Students should practice it with an experienced licensed adult and avoid beginning freeway practice during difficult weather or when the student is not yet comfortable controlling speed and lane position.
