Learning to drive in Roanoke

Roanoke gives new drivers an unusual mix of small-city streets and major regional highways. The Denton County portion of the community is close to SH 114, US 377, FM 156, and the larger highway network serving northwest Tarrant and southern Denton counties.

That combination makes course selection only one part of the preparation process. A new driver may learn on residential streets but eventually need to handle high-speed highway traffic, major intersections, construction areas, and routes connecting Roanoke with Fort Worth, Trophy Club, Westlake, and other nearby communities.

Roanoke's 2025 Census estimate is 10,931 residents. Denton County's 2025 population estimate is 1,069,346. (Census.gov)

Which Texas Driver Education Course Do I Need?

Parent-Taught Driver Education

PTDE is a teen driver education pathway in which a qualifying parent or other eligible instructor takes responsibility for the applicable training. Families must follow the TDLR PTDE process, including obtaining the PTDE Program Guide and using an approved PTDE course provider. (Texas Licensing)

Teen Driver Education, Block Method

The teen block method uses a licensed driver education provider for the classroom phase. The classroom portion is completed before the learner-license stage under the block-method structure, while required professional in-car training and supervised practice are completed separately.

Current general TDLR materials describe 24 hours for the certified-school classroom phase. (Texas Licensing)

6-Hour Adult Driver Education

First-time Texas applicants ages 18 through 24 generally need the six-hour adult course. Applicants 25 and older do not have a driver education requirement for a first Texas license, although they can voluntarily take a course. (Texas Department of Public Safety)

Texas Parent-Taught Driver Education

TDLR's current PTDE materials allow eligible teens to begin the classroom portion at 14, but the learner license is not available until the teen is at least 15 and meets the applicable education requirements.

For PTDE, the parent or other qualifying instructor must follow the official process rather than treating the online course as the entire licensing process. The family must obtain the TDLR PTDE guide, use an approved course provider, complete the required classroom instruction, and handle the applicable driving instruction and practice.

The current PTDE guide specifies 32 classroom hours for its block method. TDLR also states that parent instructors with criminal or driving histories should check eligibility with DPS before starting instruction. (Texas Licensing)

Texas Teen Driver Education, Block Method

The block method is useful for families who want the classroom phase completed before the learner license stage.

Current general TDLR information lists the certified-school teen classroom phase at 24 hours. The required in-car phase includes 7 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction and 7 hours of observation. The student must also complete 30 hours of supervised driving, including at least 10 hours at night. (Texas Licensing)

DPS requires the learner license to be held for at least six months unless the student turns 18. The provisional-license process also requires completion of the required in-car training, supervised driving, ITTD, and the driving test. (Texas Department of Public Safety)

The ITTD certificate must be presented before the driving skills test and must be within its 90-day validity period. (Texas Department of Public Safety)

DriverEdToGo provides the online classroom portion of this teen pathway. Professional behind-the-wheel instruction is completed separately.

Texas 6-Hour Adult Driver Education in Roanoke

The adult pathway is separate from the teen programs.

A first-time Texas license applicant who is 18 through 24 generally must complete a six-hour adult driver education course before the skills test. A driver 25 or older does not have a driver education requirement for a first Texas license. (Texas Department of Public Safety)

The applicant must also complete the applicable Impact Texas Drivers requirement before the skills test. DPS identifies ITAD as the one-hour program for applicable adults and says the certificate is valid for 90 days. (Texas Department of Public Safety)

A new Texas resident with a valid out-of-state driver license may qualify for exemptions from the adult course and testing requirements, so new residents should check DPS rules rather than automatically enrolling. (Texas Department of Public Safety)

Texas Driver's License Process

Teen Applicants

A teen generally completes the selected driver education classroom phase, obtains the DE-964, applies for the learner license at 15 or older, completes the required supervised practice and professional in-car instruction, holds the learner license for the required period, completes ITTD, and passes the skills test. (Texas Department of Public Safety)

Adult Applicants

Applicants ages 18 through 24 generally complete the six-hour adult course if they are first-time applicants subject to the requirement. Applicants 25 and older can apply without completing driver education, although they must meet the other DPS requirements.

Before taking a skills test, the applicable Impact Texas Drivers certificate must be current. (Texas Department of Public Safety)

Denton County Driving Overview

Denton County is a large North Texas county where the road environment changes substantially from one community to another. Major corridors include I-35E, I-35W, US 377, US 380, SH 114, SH 121, SH 170, FM roads, and toll facilities.

For beginning drivers in the Roanoke area, the southern part of the county is particularly relevant because highway traffic from Denton County and Tarrant County converges around SH 114 and US 377.

US 377 is an important regional route between Roanoke and communities farther north. TxDOT has identified a reconstruction and widening project for US 377 from SH 114 in Roanoke to south of FM 1171 in Flower Mound. The project includes a divided roadway and pedestrian facilities, with portions of the corridor crossing floodplain areas near Denton Creek. (Texas Department of Transportation)

City-Specific Driving Overview

Roanoke's local streets connect directly with high-speed regional roads. That creates a different learning environment from a community where most driving occurs on two-lane local streets.

SH 114 is the major east-west highway connection. US 377 provides a major north-south route. Local streets around the city then feed into these corridors.

A new driver should be comfortable identifying the correct lane before reaching an interchange, checking traffic before entering a faster road, and leaving extra space when traffic slows near ramps or construction.

The city also sits close to Trophy Club, Westlake, Southlake, Haslet, and other communities. Trips that appear local can quickly become regional highway trips.

Major Roads and Highways

SH 114

SH 114 is the major highway connection through the Roanoke area. It carries regional traffic and connects communities across northwest Tarrant and southern Denton counties.

A beginning driver should practice freeway entrance ramps, acceleration, lane changes, exit planning, and maintaining a safe following distance before driving this corridor independently.

US 377

US 377 runs through Roanoke and continues north toward Flower Mound and other Denton County communities. TxDOT's planned improvements between SH 114 and FM 1171 make the corridor particularly relevant for local drivers. (Texas Department of Transportation)

FM 156

FM 156 provides an important north-south connection through the western Denton County area. It has a different character from SH 114 and gives students experience transitioning between higher-speed regional routes and more conventional arterial roads.

SH 170

SH 170 connects the Alliance and northern Tarrant County area with the Denton County transportation network. Drivers who travel beyond Roanoke may encounter this corridor when moving toward Haslet, Alliance, or the western side of the metroplex.

Primary Local Driving Topic: Highway Transitions Around SH 114 and US 377

Roanoke's strongest local driving lesson is learning how to move from city streets onto regional highways.

A student can be comfortable making turns around downtown and still need more practice before entering SH 114. Highway driving requires longer sight distances, faster decisions, earlier lane positioning, and greater awareness of vehicles entering and exiting the roadway.

US 377 is also important because its character changes along the corridor. TxDOT's planned improvements include widening portions of the roadway and adding pedestrian facilities, meaning drivers should pay attention to construction activity and changing lane arrangements. (Texas Department of Transportation)

Additional Relevant Driving and Safety Considerations

Construction

Transportation work can temporarily change lanes, access points, and traffic patterns. New drivers should follow current signs and pavement markings instead of assuming a familiar route has remained unchanged.

Floodplain and Water Crossings

The US 377 improvement project includes areas where the roadway crosses Denton Creek floodplain limits. Drivers should take weather conditions seriously and never assume a familiar route is safe during flooding or severe weather. (Texas Department of Transportation)

Regional Commuter Traffic

Roanoke's location near the Denton and Tarrant county line means students may quickly encounter traffic traveling between multiple cities. Drivers should practice scanning several vehicles ahead rather than reacting only to the car directly in front of them.

Pedestrian Facilities

The planned US 377 improvements include sidewalks and shared-use paths. Drivers should watch carefully for pedestrians and cyclists where the roadway interfaces with these facilities. (Texas Department of Transportation)

Online Driver Education Throughout Denton County

Online driver education can be completed from Roanoke or other Denton County communities when the selected course is approved for online delivery.

Students in Denton, Ponder, Sanger, Prosper, Flower Mound, Lewisville, Little Elm, and other communities remain subject to the same Texas requirements. Local differences involve transportation conditions, DPS access, and available professional driving resources.

Important Cities and Communities

Denton Drivers

Denton is the county seat and home to a DPS Driver License Office. It also has a more urban road network than Roanoke and provides additional driving-school resources.

Trophy Club Drivers

Trophy Club is adjacent to the Roanoke area and shares the same broader SH 114 and US 377 transportation environment.

Westlake Drivers

Westlake sits near the same regional highway network and provides another local example of suburban streets connecting with higher-speed routes.

Flower Mound Drivers

Flower Mound lies farther north along US 377. TxDOT's US 377 project connects the Roanoke and Flower Mound areas directly. (Texas Department of Transportation)
