Primary Local Driving Topic: SH 6 and Regional Highway Transitions
For Santa Fe students, learning how a local road connects to SH 6 is particularly useful.
TxDOT's SH 6 access management study describes much of the corridor as a four-lane roadway with a continuous two-way left-turn lane and significant traffic volumes. (Texas Department of Transportation)
A beginning driver should understand how to use a two-way left-turn lane correctly, watch for vehicles entering or leaving driveways, scan intersections early, and avoid treating the center turn lane as an ordinary travel lane.
Because SH 6 also serves regional and evacuation traffic, students should learn to read route signs and maintain a larger visual field than they might on a neighborhood street.
