DPS currently describes the general teen block method as 24 classroom hours before the learner license process.

The six-hour adult course generally applies to first-time Texas driver license applicants ages 18 through 24.

The requirement does not apply to first-time applicants age 25 or older. Certain new residents ages 18 and older who surrender a valid, unexpired out-of-state license can also qualify for an exception.

The adult course is separate from the Impact Texas requirement. Applicants taking a skills test need the applicable ITD certificate within 90 days.

Teen Applicants

A teen can begin driver education at 14, but must wait until 15 for the learner license.

The learner license generally must be held six months. The teen drives with a licensed adult age 21 or older in the front seat.

Before a provisional license, the student must complete the required behind-the-wheel instruction, 30 supervised hours with 10 at night, ITTD, and the driving skills test.

What differs is the driving environment. Selma students should plan practice that eventually includes larger suburban roads and freeway access.
