Under the current TDLR guide, teens can begin classroom driver education at 14. The learner license is available at age 15 after the applicable classroom requirement and other DPS requirements are satisfied.

The qualifying instructor can be a parent, step-parent, grandparent, step-grandparent, foster parent, or legal guardian who meets the PTDE requirements. TDLR recommends checking instructor eligibility with DPS when criminal or driving history could affect qualification.

The driving portion includes 7 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, 7 hours of observation, and 30 hours of supervised practice, including 10 nighttime hours.

The block method requires the full current classroom curriculum before the learner license. TDLR enforcement identifies 32 classroom hours for the teen program.

After the learner license, professional in-car instruction and observation are completed separately. DPS identifies 7 hours of in-car instruction, 7 hours of observation, and 30 hours of supervised practice, including 10 nighttime hours.

The learner license normally must be held for at least six months. The student must also complete ITTD before the skills test and have the certificate within the required 90-day period.

A first-time Texas applicant ages 18 through 24 generally must complete the six-hour adult driver education course. A qualifying new Texas resident with a valid, unexpired out-of-state license is exempt, while applicants age 25 and older do not have a driver education requirement.

ITAD is separate from the six-hour course. Adults who need to complete a driving skills test must complete the applicable Impact Texas program, and the certificate must be valid within the 90-day testing window.

Teen Applicants

The teen process begins with classroom driver education and the learner license. DPS requires the appropriate education certificate and other documentation, including school enrollment documentation when applicable.

After the required learner period and completion of the in-car and supervised driving requirements, the student takes the driving skills test and applies for the provisional license.

Adult Applicants

Adults follow a separate process. Applicants ages 18 through 24 who need adult driver education provide their course certificate and complete the normal DPS application, vision, knowledge, and driving testing requirements.

Hardin County's road system combines major highways with smaller rural and local roads. US 69/287, US 96, SH 105, SH 326, SH 327, FM 418, FM 421, and other Farm-to-Market roads serve different parts of the county.

For Sour Lake, SH 105 is the most significant local transportation issue. TxDOT describes the existing corridor as primarily a two-lane undivided rural roadway and identifies it as part of the National Highway System, Texas Highway Freight Network, and Texas Trunk System.

Sour Lake is connected to the wider Hardin County transportation network through SH 105 and SH 326. The city therefore gives beginning drivers experience with both local streets and a highway that serves regional traffic.

TxDOT's SH 105 project extends approximately 7.34 miles from just east of SH 326 in Sour Lake toward Pine Island Bayou near Bevil Oaks. The proposed improvements include changes within the Sour Lake city limits.

SH 105

SH 105 is the defining transportation corridor for Sour Lake. TxDOT identifies the route as a National Highway System, Texas Highway Freight Network, and Texas Trunk System corridor.

SH 326

SH 326 meets SH 105 in Sour Lake and continues south toward the Jefferson County line. TxDOT project documents identify work on the SH 326 corridor in Hardin County.

FM 418 and Other FM Routes

FM routes connect the smaller communities and highway corridors throughout Hardin County. These roads can provide a different driving experience from the wider regional highways.

Sour Lake's strongest local driving topic is the SH 105 corridor.

TxDOT's current project proposes improvements from east of SH 326 to Pine Island Bayou. The project is designed to improve traffic operations, safety, drainage, and the roadway itself. The current project documentation also shows that the corridor includes both urbanized and rural sections.

For a beginning driver, that means learning to recognize work zones, temporary traffic controls, changing lane arrangements, and differences between city driving and rural highway driving. Students should follow posted signs and temporary markings rather than relying on what the road looked like during an earlier practice session.

Drainage deserves attention in the Sour Lake area. The current SH 105 project specifically includes drainage improvements, and the corridor crosses areas influenced by Pine Island Bayou.

Heavy rain and tropical weather can affect Southeast Texas roads. Current National Park Service conditions in the broader Big Thicket region show that storms can produce high water, washouts, debris, and damaged roads.

Students in Sour Lake can complete an eligible online driver education classroom course from home. Texas licensing requirements do not change because the student lives in Sour Lake rather than Silsbee, Lumberton, or Kountze.

The local planning issue is what happens after the online portion. Teen block-method students need separate professional in-car training and observation. PTDE families need a qualifying instructor. Adults use the separate six-hour course when it applies.

Kountze Drivers

Kountze is the county seat and lies along US 69/287. The Big Thicket visitor center is located on FM 420 north of town.

Silsbee Drivers

Silsbee is connected to Sour Lake through the county highway system, including SH 326 and other regional routes. TxDOT project documents identify SH 326 work from SH 105 toward the Jefferson County line.

Lumberton Drivers

Lumberton is one of the larger communities in Hardin County and sits on the US 69 corridor. TxDOT is studying a US 69 relief route between the Lumberton and Kountze areas.
