A learner who is comfortable on local streets may not yet understand how quickly traffic approaches on a freeway entrance. Before independent freeway travel, the student should practice judging gaps, accelerating onto the roadway, checking blind spots, changing lanes only when safe, and maintaining a steady speed.

The student should also practice leaving the freeway without waiting until the last moment to move toward an exit.

The roads outside the more developed portions of Grayson County can feel very different after sunset. Students should practice only when their supervising adult believes they are ready.

Night practice should emphasize headlight use, visibility, speed control, and awareness of animals or objects that may be harder to see.
