Moving From Spur Streets to SH 70
The most useful local lesson for a new Spur driver is learning when a town trip has become a highway trip.
On local streets, a driver may spend more time watching intersections, parked vehicles and turns. Once the vehicle reaches SH 70, the driver needs to look much farther ahead, maintain a steady speed, check mirrors more frequently and anticipate vehicles approaching from greater distances.
The change should also work in the other direction. When returning to Spur, a driver should slow appropriately before entering the town environment rather than waiting until reaching a local intersection.
This type of practice is especially valuable for students who will later drive between Spur, Dickens, Post, Lubbock or other regional destinations.
