Learning to drive in Stockdale
The Texas State Historical Association identifies Stockdale at the junction of:
- U.S. 87
- SH 97
- SH 123.
That gives the city a substantially stronger independent road identity than a generic rural page.
U.S. 87
U.S. 87 connects Stockdale with La Vernia and the San Antonio region to the northwest and continues southeast toward Cuero and Victoria. TxDOT’s highway designation specifically identifies Stockdale on the U.S. 87 route.
Students should practice:
- highway-speed control
- long following distance
- truck awareness
- rural-to-city transitions
- early turn preparation
SH 97
SH 97 connects Stockdale with Floresville and other eastern Wilson County destinations.
The current Wilson County Rural TIP includes future SH 97 pavement work north of Bluebonnet Drive to U.S. 87, programmed for FY 2028.
SH 123
SH 123 is another major Stockdale corridor.
TxDOT’s FY 2028 program includes seal coat and pavement-marking work on SH 123 both north and south of FM 541.
Students should expect:
- highway intersections
- agricultural vehicles
- trucks
- rural entrances
- changing pavement conditions as projects progress
City Hall
Stockdale City Hall is located at:
700 W. Main Street Stockdale, TX 78160.
Main Street gives students lower-speed practice with:
- civic traffic
- parking
- local businesses
- pedestrians
- turning vehicles
Event Traffic
Stockdale’s current 2026 calendar includes Market Days and rodeo events, including activities at the Stockdale Rodeo Grounds on SH 123.
During events, students may encounter:
- trailers
- horse-related traffic
- pickup trucks
- pedestrians
- temporary congestion
- drivers unfamiliar with local roads
Temporary Local Closures
The City of Stockdale currently posts a recurring Wednesday closure on West Mayer Street for youth activities.
This is useful current local information because students should follow temporary road controls rather than assume every familiar street remains open.
Agricultural and Ranch Traffic
Stockdale’s own history emphasizes its agricultural and ranching roots.
Students should expect:
- livestock trailers
- farm equipment
- trucks
- rural driveways
- slower vehicles
Driver License Resources
Stockdale does not have the county’s main DPS Driver License facility.
Floresville remains the strongest documented Wilson County resource.
