Teen Applicants

After completing the applicable classroom stage and obtaining a learner license, the student completes the required in-car training and supervised driving. The learner license generally must be held for six months before the provisional license stage.

Bell County's transportation network ranges from I-35 and other multilane highways to rural Farm-to-Market roads. I-35 is particularly important around Troy because it connects the community with Temple and communities farther north.

That means a student can encounter two very different driving environments in one trip. Interstate driving demands lane management, merging, and awareness of high-speed traffic. FM roads require more attention to rural intersections, sight distance, and changing road conditions.

Students should not treat FM 935 or FM 1237 as simply slower versions of I-35. The roads require different visual and speed-management habits.

• SH 317: Regional route toward Belton and surrounding communities.

Troy is a useful location for learning the difference between freeway and rural-road driving.

On I-35, drivers must monitor multiple lanes, ramps, faster traffic, and changing traffic flow. On FM 935 and FM 1237, the environment is less freeway-oriented, so sight distance, intersection scanning, and speed selection become more important.

A new driver should build skills progressively instead of moving directly from neighborhood streets to interstate driving.

Students should practice accelerating appropriately before merging, checking blind spots, and identifying the correct lane before entering I-35.

The required nighttime supervised driving hours provide an opportunity to learn how headlights affect visibility on roads outside the most brightly lit urban areas.

On FM roads, drivers should approach intersections with enough time to identify cross traffic and turning movements.

Construction Awareness

Students in Troy can complete the applicable online classroom portion without traveling to a classroom in Temple or another Bell County city.

The online portion does not eliminate the separate in-car requirements or DPS licensing steps. Students should plan those parts locally after identifying the correct course.

Temple Drivers

Temple is immediately south of Troy and provides access to I-35, Loop 363, US 190, SH 36, SH 53, and SH 95.

Salado Drivers

Salado is south along I-35 and has a mix of interstate, village, and Farm-to-Market road conditions.

Belton Drivers

Belton is farther south and is an important connection between I-35 and the US 190 and I-14 corridors.

Rogers Drivers

Rogers is east of Temple and has a more rural environment around US 190, SH 36, FM 437, and FM 2184.
