Learning to drive in Van
The City of Van states that the community is located along I-20, about 72 miles east of Dallas and 26 miles northwest of Tyler.
Eligible students use one Texas driver education pathway based on age and licensing plan:
- Parent-Taught Driver Education
- Teen Driver Education, Block Method
- Texas 6-Hour Adult Driver Education.
Interstate 20
I-20 is Van’s defining transportation corridor.
For a beginning driver, I-20 introduces:
- Acceleration lanes
- Highway-speed merging
- Trucks
- Lane changes
- Frontage-road traffic
- Exit planning
- High-speed following distance
Students should not begin interstate practice until they can already maintain lane position, judge gaps, and handle multilane surface roads consistently.
I-20 Frontage Roads
Frontage roads are especially important around Van because they combine freeway-related and local traffic.
Students should expect:
- Vehicles entering ramps
- Vehicles exiting I-20
- Commercial driveways
- Cross-street traffic
- Sudden lane changes
- Higher speeds than residential roads
This is one of the main reasons Van deserves a page independent from the county page.
Current I-20 Maintenance
TxDOT’s August 24, 2026 update identifies continuing I-20 maintenance across Gregg, Smith, and Van Zandt counties, including pothole repair, debris removal, frontage-road and ramp work, guardrail repairs, and sign replacement.
Students should watch for:
- Maintenance vehicles
- Shoulder activity
- Temporary lane closures
- Workers near ramps
- Changed signs or pavement conditions
Van City Hall
Van City Hall is located at:
310 Chestnut Street Van, TX 75790.
The city administration, court clerk, parks department, and utility offices operate from this location, making Chestnut Street a clear civic traffic area.
Van High School
Van High School is located at:
985 N. Maple Street Van, TX 75790.
Van ISD also reported student parking-pass activity before the start of the 2026 school year, confirming regular student-vehicle traffic at the high school.
New drivers should expect:
- School buses
- Parent vehicles
- Student drivers
- Pedestrians
- Athletic-event traffic
- Busy arrival and dismissal periods
Local-to-Interstate Progression
Van gives students a useful training sequence:
- Quiet residential streets
- Chestnut Street and local intersections
- School-area driving
- Frontage roads
- Entrance and exit ramps
- I-20 during lighter traffic
- Rural roads outside the city
This progression is more freeway-focused than nearby Edgewood, Fruitvale, or Edom.
Rural Roads Outside Van
Leaving Van quickly introduces:
- Wooded roads
- Curves
- Rural driveways
- Farm and service vehicles
- Wildlife
- Reduced nighttime lighting
Students should adjust speed to visible road conditions rather than relying only on the posted limit.
Driver License Resources
Van does not have a verified standard DPS Driver License Office in the county baseline.
The Canton location at 15500 FM 1255 is documented specifically as a Commercial Driver’s License Office. It should not automatically be presented as the correct office for ordinary teen learner-license or Class C services.
Applicants should use the current Texas DPS locator and appointment system.
