Learning to drive in Waller

The city’s history confirms that U.S. 290 has been a defining transportation route through Waller since the 1930s.

The local environment combines highway traffic, railroad infrastructure, schools, commercial growth, FM-road connections, and major future transportation planning.

U.S. 290

U.S. 290 is Waller’s principal regional road.

Students should practice:

  • Highway-speed control
  • Safe following distance
  • Truck awareness
  • Early turn preparation
  • Speed transitions
  • Highway-to-local-road changes

Waller’s official history notes that growth accelerated substantially after construction of the U.S. 290 bypass and expansion from Houston.

FM 362

FM 362 is one of the city’s most important north-south connections and links Waller with rural central and southern Waller County.

Students should expect:

  • Rural intersections
  • Farm entrances
  • Trucks
  • Curves
  • Lower nighttime lighting

FM 1488 Widening

TxDOT is proposing to widen FM 1488 from Business U.S. 290 to Joseph Road from two lanes to four lanes.

Proposed improvements include:

  • Four travel lanes
  • Medians
  • Wider shoulders
  • Sidepaths or sidewalks in some sections
  • Bridge reconstruction at stream crossings.

The project is still in planning and environmental development.

City Hall

Waller City Hall is located at:

1218 Farr Street Waller, TX 77484.

This gives the Farr Street area a clear civic traffic role.

Students should expect:

  • Municipal traffic
  • Pedestrians
  • Local parking
  • Stop-controlled intersections

Waller High School

Waller High School is located at:

31213 Waller Spring Creek Road Waller, TX 77484.

School traffic adds:

  • Buses
  • Parent vehicles
  • Student drivers
  • Pedestrians
  • Event congestion

Railroad Awareness

Waller developed historically along the railroad, and the city’s history describes the relationship between the railroad and the later U.S. 290 corridor.

Students should:

  • Obey gates and signals.
  • Never stop on railroad tracks.
  • Leave enough space to clear a crossing.
  • Expect trains even when road traffic is light.

36A North

Waller is another municipality directly within the proposed 36A North study area.

TxDOT says the facility would connect I-10 west of Katy with U.S. 290 west of Waller and primarily serve Waller County.

The July 2026 public scoping process evaluated multiple preliminary alternatives.

This remains planning-stage infrastructure.

Rapid Growth

Waller’s strongest local lesson is adapting to a road system that is changing from small-town and rural toward increasingly suburban conditions.

Students may encounter:

  • New commercial entrances
  • Increased commuter traffic
  • Road widening
  • Construction
  • New traffic signals
  • More trucks and delivery vehicles

Driver License Resources

Waller does not have the county’s confirmed Driver License Office.

Hempstead remains the primary verified Waller County licensing resource.
