Learning to drive in Warren City

Warren City is a small incorporated community in northwestern Gregg County that also extends into neighboring Upshur County. It developed along FM 2275, a corridor that connects the White Oak area with Longview and other regional roads.

That setting gives beginning drivers a different experience from central Longview. Local streets connect quickly to Farm-to-Market roads and regional highways, and students may encounter active roadway construction along FM 2275.

TDLR allows teens to begin classroom driver education at 14. A learner license cannot be issued until age 15 and the applicable classroom requirement has been completed.

Current TDLR materials state that the block method requires all 32 classroom hours before the learner license. The PTDE process also requires the family to order the TDLR guide and use an approved PTDE provider.

Current TDLR enforcement materials identify 32 classroom hours, seven hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, and seven hours of observation for minor driver education.

Older DPS pages may still show 24 classroom hours for the block method. The current TDLR materials are the basis for the 32-hour description used here.

The online classroom and professional in-car instruction are separate parts of the pathway.

Texas Driver's License Process

Teen Applicants

A teen generally completes the required classroom education, applies for the learner license at age 15 or older, and practices under supervision.

The learner license must generally be held for six months. A licensed adult age 21 or older must be in the front passenger seat, and cell phone use is prohibited.

For the provisional license, DPS requires completion of the behind-the-wheel education, 30 hours of supervised driving including 10 nighttime hours, ITTD, and the driving test.

Adult Applicants

Adult applicants should complete the applicable six-hour course when required, satisfy the knowledge and vision requirements, complete Impact Texas when taking a skills test, and bring the required documents to DPS.

County-Specific Driving Overview

Gregg County's road network changes noticeably between the Longview urban area and the smaller northern communities.

I-20 is the major freeway and carries substantial regional traffic. TxDOT's corridor study recorded 24 miles of frontage roads and an average truck share of 32 percent within the Gregg County study area.

Warren City's location near FM 2275, US 271, FM 3272, FM 1845, and the surrounding Gregg-Upshur County road network means students should become comfortable with rural and suburban transitions rather than learning only on quiet residential streets.

City-Specific Driving Overview

Warren City is a small community, but its connection to FM 2275 makes it part of a larger regional travel corridor.

A new driver may move from a residential street onto a Farm-to-Market road and then toward White Oak or Longview. That transition requires attention to speed, turning movements, lane position, and changing roadway conditions.

The city's location across the Gregg-Upshur county line also means students should recognize that a local trip can cross county boundaries without changing the underlying Texas licensing requirements.

Major Roads and Highways

FM 2275

FM 2275 is the most important local road for understanding Warren City's current transportation environment. TxDOT is widening the corridor from FM 3272 in White Oak to FM 1845 in Longview from two lanes to four lanes.

FM 3272

FM 3272 connects the White Oak area with FM 2275. It is part of the transportation network surrounding Warren City and White Oak.

FM 1845

FM 1845 connects Longview with the northern part of the county and the FM 2275 corridor.

US 271

US 271 is another important northern Gregg County route and connects with the broader Longview area. TxDOT planning documents show the relationship between US 271, FM 2275, White Oak, Warren City, and surrounding communities.

I-20

I-20 is farther south of Warren City but becomes relevant for regional trips toward Longview, Kilgore, and destinations beyond Gregg County.

Primary Local Driving Topic: FM 2275 Construction and Roadway Changes

FM 2275 is a particularly useful local topic because active improvements are changing the roadway.

In August 2026, TxDOT reported construction involving concrete barriers, excavation, bridge work, and widening between FM 3272 and FM 1845. The project is scheduled to continue into 2027.

For a beginning driver, construction means lane markings, temporary barriers, workers, equipment, and traffic patterns can change. Students should slow down as conditions require, follow temporary signs, avoid distractions, and leave additional space around construction vehicles.

Additional Relevant Driving and Safety Sections

Rural Road Awareness

The Warren City area provides practice in reading the road rather than relying only on traffic signals. Drivers should scan ahead, monitor side roads, watch for changing speed limits, and keep their attention on vehicles entering from smaller roads.

Work Zones

The current FM 2275 project makes work-zone awareness especially relevant. Separately, Texas now requires driver education courses completed on or after September 1, 2026 to include construction and maintenance work-zone information.

Night Driving

Teens need 30 hours of supervised practice, including at least 10 hours at night. The quieter appearance of a rural road does not eliminate the need for careful nighttime scanning.

Online Driver Education Throughout Gregg County

A student living in Warren City can complete an eligible online driver education classroom course from home. The fact that Warren City crosses into Upshur County does not create a different Texas driver education requirement.

What changes is the local practice environment. Students may need to move between Farm-to-Market roads, suburban streets, Longview's larger road network, and eventually I-20.

Important Cities and Communities

White Oak

White Oak is particularly relevant to Warren City because FM 2275 begins its current improvement corridor at FM 3272 in White Oak. The city also sits on US 80.

Longview

Longview is the county seat and the primary regional center for DPS services and professional driver-training resources.

Gladewater

Gladewater is another important northern Gregg County community connected to the regional highway network, including US 271 and FM 2275.

County- and City-Specific FAQ

Can Warren City residents take online driver's ed?

Yes. Eligible students can complete the applicable online portion from home.

Does Warren City's location in two counties change Texas driver education requirements?

No. Texas driver education requirements are statewide. Warren City's cross-county location affects local travel, not the legal course requirements.

What is the main road new Warren City drivers should learn?

FM 2275 is particularly important because it connects Warren City and surrounding communities to White Oak and Longview and is currently undergoing major improvements.

Is FM 2275 under construction?

Yes. TxDOT reported active work on the corridor in 2026, including barriers, excavation, bridge construction, and widening.

Where is the Gregg County DPS driver license office?

The Longview Driver License Office is at 416 Lake Lamond Road.

Can I use a parent for the block method?

The block method and PTDE are separate pathways. A parent acting as the qualifying instructor follows the PTDE process. A student using the teen block-method pathway should not assume the PTDE instructor rules apply.

How long must a teen hold a learner license?

Normally at least six months unless the student turns 18.

How many supervised driving hours are required?

DPS requires 30 hours, with at least 10 hours at night, for the teen provisional license pathway.

Does the online classroom include the professional driving lessons?

No. The online classroom portion and required professional in-car instruction are separate.

Is adult driver's ed required at age 18?

For a first Texas driver license, yes, generally. Applicants ages 18 through 24 must complete the six-hour adult course unless an applicable exception applies.

Does a teen need Impact Texas Teen Drivers?

Yes, when the teen is taking the applicable skills test under the minor driver education pathway. The certificate must be within the required 90-day period.

Are Longview and Kilgore useful resources for Warren City students?
