Waskom, Texas Online Driver's Ed

TDLR's current PTDE guide allows qualifying parents and other specified family or guardian relationships to serve as the teen's instructor when the applicable requirements are met. A parent with a criminal or driving history should verify eligibility with DPS before beginning.

The student can begin classroom instruction at 14. The learner license is available at 15 after the required classroom stage and other licensing requirements are met.

Under the current TDLR PTDE guide:

• Concurrent Method: six classroom hours before the learner license.
• Block Method: all 32 classroom hours before the learner license.
• The family must order the TDLR PTDE Program Guide.
• The guide costs $20 and is non-refundable.
• The family must use a TDLR-approved PTDE course.
• The student must complete the required in-car instruction and supervised practice.
• The additional supervised practice includes 30 hours, with at least 10 hours at night.

The online portion can be completed from Waskom. The practical driving portion still has to be completed under the applicable PTDE rules.

The block method is particularly straightforward to explain: complete the classroom stage first, then continue with the learner license and driving requirements.

DriverEdToGo currently advertises a 32-hour block course.

There is a current source discrepancy that families should understand. DPS's public teen learner page describes the general block method as 24 classroom hours, while TDLR's current PTDE guide describes 32 hours for PTDE block instruction. DriverEdToGo currently advertises its block course as 32 hours. Do not combine those references into one rule. The student should follow the requirements attached to the specific approved course and certificate being used.

After the classroom portion, the student must complete the applicable behind-the-wheel instruction and supervised driving. TDLR's driver education overview identifies 7 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, 7 hours of observation, and 30 additional supervised driving hours, including 10 hours at night.

The learner license generally must be held for at least six months unless the teen reaches age 18. Before the skills test, the student must also complete the required Impact Texas Teen Drivers program.

The online classroom course does not replace professional in-car training. A Waskom student should arrange the applicable driving-school portion separately.

A first-time Texas driver license applicant ages 18 through 24 generally must complete the 6-hour adult driver education course. DPS states that applicants age 25 and older have no driver education requirement. A qualifying new Texas resident age 18 or older who surrenders a valid, unexpired out-of-state license may be exempt.

AdultDriversEdExpress provides its adult course online. Its current registration page lists a $29.95 course price, with separate certificate delivery options.

The adult course is only one part of the licensing process. After completing it, follow DPS instructions for the applicable knowledge and skills testing process and other documentation.

The Impact Texas Adult Drivers program is separate from the six-hour course. Applicants who need ITAD must complete the program before the skills test, with the certificate dated within 90 days.

Teen Applicants

A Waskom teen follows the same Texas Graduated Driver License process as a teen elsewhere in the state.

Classroom instruction can begin at age 14. The learner license is available at age 15 after the required classroom stage and other DPS requirements are satisfied.

After the learner license is issued, the teen completes the required in-car instruction and supervised driving. The learner license generally must be held for at least six months unless the student turns 18.

The final stages include completion of the required education and driving hours, ITTD, and the driving skills test.

Adult Applicants

Adults should use the adult licensing pathway rather than the teen graduated licensing process.

Applicants 18 through 24 who are applying for their first Texas license generally need the six-hour course. Applicants 25 and older do not have a state driver education requirement.

The applicant should schedule the appropriate DPS appointment and bring the required documentation. If a driving test is required, the appropriate Impact Texas Drivers certificate must be valid within 90 days.

Harrison County is an East Texas county with a 2025 estimated population of 71,956. Marshall is the county seat.

The county's major transportation framework includes I-20, US 59, US 80, SH 43, SH 154, and numerous Farm to Market roads. TxDOT's I-20 East Texas Corridor Study identifies the portion from the Tyler and Longview region to the Louisiana state line near Waskom as part of the East corridor.

I-20 is the defining road for Waskom. It carries regional traffic directly through the city and continues to the Louisiana state line. TxDOT also operates a Texas Travel Information Center on I-20 in Waskom, with separate truck and passenger parking and travel information services.

For a new driver, the county therefore offers a useful progression from local streets to Farm to Market roads and then to interstate travel.

The city is located directly along I-20 near the Louisiana border. That makes interstate access part of the local driving environment rather than simply something residents encounter on occasional trips.

A student learning in Waskom should become comfortable with the difference between local street driving and I-20 driving. Entering an interstate requires planning the merge rather than waiting until the last moment. Once on the freeway, the driver must maintain a consistent speed, check mirrors before changing lanes, and watch for vehicles entering from ramps.

Waskom also provides access to FM 9 toward the Caddo Lake area. This creates another useful transition between interstate and rural roadway driving.

I-20

I-20 is the major transportation corridor through Waskom. TxDOT identifies Waskom as part of the East Texas I-20 corridor and operates a travel information center on the westbound side in the city.

FM 9

FM 9 provides access north from Waskom toward the Caddo Lake area. The city identifies the route as the way to reach Caddo Lake State Park from Waskom.

US 80

US 80 is another major east-west route through Harrison County. It connects the Marshall and Waskom areas and provides an alternative regional route to I-20 in portions of the county.

FM 134 and FM 1998

These routes become useful when traveling through the northern and central parts of Harrison County, including the Scottsville and Caddo Lake areas.

For Waskom students, freeway merging deserves special attention because I-20 runs directly through the community.

A new driver should practice:

• Checking traffic before entering the ramp
• Matching the speed of freeway traffic when conditions allow
• Identifying a safe gap before merging
• Avoiding abrupt lane changes
• Checking mirrors and blind spots
• Leaving enough distance from large vehicles
• Reading exit signs early
• Moving into the correct lane well before an exit
• Returning to local-road speeds after leaving the interstate

The TxDOT travel center in Waskom also serves both passenger and truck traffic, illustrating the range of vehicles using this corridor.

Truck Traffic

I-20 serves substantial regional freight movement. New drivers should expect commercial vehicles and give them additional following space. Avoid lingering beside a truck when changing lanes.

Louisiana Border Travel

Waskom's location means some drivers quickly cross from Texas into Louisiana. A beginning driver should pay attention to route signs and understand that crossing the state line does not change the basic need to follow posted speed limits and traffic controls.

Rural Road Driving

FM 9 and other Farm to Market roads provide a different driving environment from I-20. Practice should include scanning for side-road intersections, maintaining lane position, and managing speed on rural routes.

Night Driving

The teen program requires at least 10 hours of nighttime supervised driving within the 30-hour practice component. Waskom's mix of local roads and the interstate can help families expose a teen to different nighttime driving conditions gradually.

Eligible Waskom residents can complete the online classroom portion of the applicable Texas driver education program from home.

Marshall

Marshall is the Harrison County seat and the location of the county's DPS Driver License Office. It is connected to Waskom by the I-20 corridor.

Hallsville

Hallsville lies west of Marshall along the I-20 corridor. It is relevant to Waskom residents who travel west for school, work, services, or longer regional trips.

Scottsville

Scottsville is located near FM 1998 and FM 2199. It provides a contrasting rural-road environment to Waskom's interstate setting.

Uncertain

Uncertain is located at the western end of Caddo Lake and connects to the broader county network through FM 2198 and FM 134.

Waskom also has a Harrison County Registration and Titling office, but that is not the same thing as a DPS Driver License Office. The local registration office handles vehicle-related transactions and should not be substituted for driver license services.
