How to get your Texas driver’s license
Before heading to your appointment, gather your paperwork and understand the steps after driver education. Texas DPS issues driver licenses; TDLR regulates driver education courses.
Enroll nowPrepare your application and documents
Complete the driver license application with your full name, date of birth and address. Expect questions about your ability to drive safely and your physical description. Use the DPS document checklist to confirm the evidence needed for your circumstances.
- Proof of identity, Texas residency, citizenship or lawful presence, and your Social Security number.
- Your driver education completion certificate, when required.
- Insurance for vehicles you own, or a statement that you do not own a vehicle. Check whether vehicle registration evidence applies to your situation.
At the driver license office
Schedule your appointment, bring the application and supporting documents, provide your signature and thumbprints, have your photograph taken, and pay the applicable application fee. Check that your personal details are correct.
Knowledge, vision and driving tests
Our course includes the knowledge exam. Bring your completion certificate as evidence that you passed it. You must also meet the vision and driving-test requirements; completing driver education does not replace those steps.
Before your road test
Complete the applicable Impact Texas Drivers program. Bring its certificate to your driving test within its 90-day validity period. Confirm vehicle and appointment requirements with your testing provider.
After you pass
Once you meet all requirements, DPS can issue your license. Keep your certificates and check the information on your temporary license. Ask DPS about special circumstances, including an existing out-of-state license.
